When detective Michael Britten regains consciousness after his family's car accident, he is told that his wife, Hannah, has died, but that his teenage son, Rex, has survived. As he tries to piece his life back together, he finds himself in a world where his wife is very much alive, but his son Rex died in the accident. To keep both of his loved ones alive, he begins to live two opposing realities. In an attempt to regain some normalcy, Michael turns to his work solving crimes in both worlds, with the help of two different partners, detective Isaiah "Bird" Freeman and detective Efrem Vega. He starts solving impossible cases by using his opposing realities to gain unique perspectives and connect clues that overlap between the worlds. Helping Michael navigate his new existence are his office-assigned therapists, Dr. Evans and Dr. Lee.
